Thursday, December 18, 1997 Published at 09:21 GMT Sport: Football Cup glory for Yorkshire part-timers Emley's penalty hero Chris Marples makes the save to see his team through
Non-league Emley are heading for an FA Cup third round tie at Premier League West Ham, after knocking out Lincoln City in a penalty shoot-out.
Hero for the Yorkshire part-timers was goalkeeper Chris Marples who saved two spot kicks to seal the greatest day in the club's 94-year history.
Emley, whose team includes firemen, a police officer, a sales rep and a gardener, fought back from 2-0 down to take the game into extra-time.
Captain Steve Nicholson, who scored two of Emley's goals, said: "It's fantastic. We are a battling side and our cup spirit showed through."
Nicholson, a firefighter, who went straight to the game after a day shift, admitted they had little chance of humbling West Ham.
But he said it was a terrific time for the club and its fans. "They turned out in their droves - that's the community spirit we have at Emley."
But there was disappointment for non-leaguers Ilkeston Town.
They missed out on a trip to Crystal Palace after losing 3-2 to Scunthorpe after extra time in a replay before a capacity crowd of 2,109 at their New Manor ground.
