ANC conference elects surprise party chairman

As the African National Congress continues its conference in Mafikeng, it's been announced that the post of party chairman has been won by Patrick Lekota, who was dismissed as premier of Free State province last year.

In a vote, he beat the Sports Minister, Steve Tshwete, who had been the choice of the ANC leadership.

Correspondents say it's a political comeback for Mr Lekota, who was ousted in an internal party feud.

The most senior position in the ANC, that of president, has already been won by Thabo Mbeki.
