Kashmir demonstration over fire in shrine
Four people were injured when police opened fire on demonstrators protesting over the destruction by fire of a six-hundred year old Muslim shrine in Indian administered Kashmir. Demonstrators clashed with police near the ruins of the shrine, throwing stones and setting fire to two police vehicles. A deputy police superintendent was beaten up. The cause of the fire in the carved wooden building in the town of Tral, south of Srinigar, is still being investigated. The authorities say they believe it was due to a short-circuit.
