Should we do more for the homeless?

The British government has given over part of Admiralty Arch in London to 60 young homeless people under the auspices of the charity Centrepoint. They will be housed there until March 1998.

It is part of this year's programme of Government-funded cold weather shelters. Each winter in Britain the government faces increased pressure to solve the homeless problem. In the season of good will Would we be happy to pay more tax if more money went to helping the homeless?

Many people would say that providing shelters for the winter only scratches the surface of a much larger problem. Others say the homeless have to be forced to help themselves.
