UN General Assembly appeals for aid to Tajiks
The United Nations General Assembly has appealed to the world community for further humanitarian aid for Tajikistan. The assembly on Tuesday welcomed a proposal by the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, to ask the international community to provide large-scale humanitarian assistance to Tajikistan in 1998. The Tajik envoy to the UN, Rashid Olimov, said that without international assistance it would be difficult to restore peace and continue the process of national reconciliation in the republic.
