Ancient tomb found in eastern China

A large tomb thought to be 1,700 years old has been discovered in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

The tomb, which was found in Shandong's Qihe County, covers 2,500 square meters and has a central hall 3.2 meters high with large slabstone ceilings supported by 10 big stone columns.

The main hall is surrounded by interior passages with ancient characters and paintings of human figures carved on their walls, pillars and stone doors.

The tomb is thought by archaeologists to have been built in the late Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD).

It is of great historical value on account of its size and complicated structure, the agency added.
