Westendorp uses his new powers in Bosnia

The chief international peace coordinator in Bosnia-Hercegovina, Carlos Westendorp, has, for the first time, used his extra powers to impose legislation on a divided Bosnian leadership.

Mr Westendorp used his new authority, which was provided by an international conference on Bosnia last week, to impose a law on Bosnian citizenship after the Bosnian parliament failed to meet a deadline for passage of the legislation.

On Monday, parliament finally passed a new law on a common Bosnian passport, after threats by international administrators to impose it in case of further delays.
