Chesterfield's dreams of emulating last season's incredible FA cup run are over, after they lost their second round replay 2-0 at home to Grimsby.
Jack Lester's 22nd-minute strike and a goal 11 minutes from time from Paul Groves eliminated the 1996-7 semi-finalists, who had recovered from two goals down at Blundell Park to earn the replay.
Chesterfield fought all the way and laid siege to Grimsby's goal in the second half, but injuries left them without a cutting edge. Top marksman David Reeves, out for nearly a month with a knee injury, came on as a 78th-minute substitution but had no time to make an impact.
Second division Grimsby now entertain first division Norwich in round three.
Elsewhere, the class of Vauxhall Conference club Cheltenham Town finally told over Boreham Wood from the Ryman League.
Clive Walker won the battle of the Chelsea pensioners as he lined up against former Stamford Bridge team-mate Kerry Dixon. The 40 year old winger helped create Cheltenham's second goal, scored by substitute Jimmy Smith in the 69th minute.
Bob Bloomer had put the visitors one up in the 42nd minute, and Cheltenham held out to earn a home tie against Reading on January 3.
Four other ties went into extra time, with two eventually settled on penalties. Non league Hereford eventually overcame Colchester 5-4 after the match had ended 1-1 after extra time, they will earn a tie at home to Tranmere Rovers.
Basingstoke though won't be facing Leicester in the third round, that falls to Northampton who overcame the non league side 4-3 on penalties after the match had finished goalless.
Notts County lost at home to Preston despite taking the lead through Farrell in the 51st minute, but Preston equalised in the 90th minute and then took the lead in the 96th minute. They will entertain Stockport in the third round.
And lowly Torquay held division two leaders Watford 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes, but the Hornets won through 2-0 in extra time, to earn a home tie with Sheffield Wednesday.
