Janet Jagan favourite to win Guyana presidency

Counting is continuing in the South American state of Guyana after elections for a new parliament and president.

With around twenty per cent of the votes counted, the ruling People's Progressive Party, which is mainly supported by the Asian community, is still in the lead.

If this trend continues, it's leader, Janet Jagan, the widow of the former President, will become the country's first white female head of state.

Her main opponent is Desmond Hoyte of the People's National Congress.
