Kenya: warning on election violence

The electoral commission in Kenya has said it lacks authority to deal with violent incidents ahead of elections due in two weeks.

The commission chairman, Samuel Kivuiti, told reporters in Nairobi that he would seek wider powers in future.

The BBC East Africa correspondent says the complaint comes despite a code of conduct under which political parties risk being penalised unless they take steps to prevent violence and intimidation.

Our correspondent says several people have been killed, campaign cars have been attacked, and candidates harassed.

But she says the clashes do not compare with those before the 1992 elections.
