Georgian warlord treason trial

The trial of the former head of a Georgian paramilitary organisation and fourteen other men has resumed in Tbilisi after a two week postponement.

They are charged with attempting to assassinate President Eduard Shevardnadze with a car bomb in August 1995.

Mr Shevardnadze was injured in the attack.

The accused, led by Dzhaba Yosseliani, are also charged with high treason and attempting a coup.

They brought proceedings to a halt earlier this month by noisily protesting against being held in a security cage in the court-room.

They have now agreed to sit on a bench behind bars, but not in a cage, but continue to challenge the legality of the proceedings.
