Concern in Pakistan over Presidential nominee

The Human Rights Commission in Pakistan has expressed concern over the nomination of a retired Supreme Court judge, Rafiq Tarar, as the government's presidential candidate.

The head of the commission, Asma Jahanghir, said Mr Tarar, who is a conservative Muslim, has long been known for his strong, orthodox views on the rights of women and minority communities.

The prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, said Mr Tarar was chosen for his honesty and patriotism.
