Amnesty demands probe into Sri Lankan prison riots

The human rights group, Amnesty International, has demanded a full and impartial inquiry by the Sri Lankan government into the killing of three suspected Tamil rebels in a prison riot last Friday.

In a letter to the government, Amnesty said the attack on the Tamils by Sinhalese prisoners, in the southern town of Kalutera, appeared to have been premeditated.

Yesterday, the Tamil Tiger rebels alleged that the Sri Lankan forces stood by as the three Tamils were killed.

The government has already responded by transferring most of the Sinhalese inmates to other prisons and setting up a special police unit within the jail.
