New government in India's Manipur state

A new coalition government has been sworn in in the north-east Indian state of Manipur -- following the collapse of the ministry led by the Congress Party which lost a vote of confidence on Monday.

The coalition is headed by the new Chief Minister Nipamacha Singh, who has appointed twenty-six ministers to his cabinet.

Four parties including the Communist Party of India and a breakaway section of the Congress Party make up the new government.

A BBC correspondent in Calcutta says the cabinet is the largest ever in Manipur, which has been plagued by ethnic trouble.

Even as the new government took office, the police found the bodies of five Bengalis killed in a village in Western Manipur.
