Kofi Annan meets Burmese leader

The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, has announced a new initiative to try to bring about democratic reform in Burma.

He says he will send a special envoy to Rangoon next month to meet members of the military government.

The envoy will also see the leader of the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi, who issued a new appeal to neighbouring countries in South-east Asia this week to support political change in Burma.
