Since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, artists from all over the world have paid her tribute. But the Italians are elevating her to almost holy status.

Craftsmen are making statuettes of Diana to include in some of the traditional nativity scenes in the Italian city of Naples.

The craftsmen, who are renowned for their intricate decoration of Christmas cribs, often add contemporary figures alongside the Holy Family.

It is unusual, however, for a foreigner to be included in the collection.

One craftsman, Giuseppe Farrigno, says the motivation to include Diana is not commercial but comes from the heart.

At £35, the figurines are not cheap. But makers say they are not making them simply to cash in. All proceeds will go to charity.

Also offered this year is a figurine of Mother Teresa. Craftsmen are also planning one of the late Gianni Versace.

The makers say they have already had requests for the Diana statuette from all over Italy.
