Raymond Catterill
The grandfather-of-six is hoping to go to Leeds University
A grandfather-of-six is getting ready to start a new life as a student at Leeds University.

Raymond Catterill, 68, discovered today he had passed his A-level English exam which he sat at Cross Keys Learning Centre, Leeds.

As well as his new qualification Mr Catterill, who left school in 1950 with no exam passes, has an A-level in English Literature.

He said: "I am pleased to have passed and I'm looking forward to university.

"I left school at 15. It's what people of my station did then.

"We just went straight into work. Qualifications weren't that important then."

After going back to college to sit his GSCEs he found himself bitten by the learning bug.

After discovering he had got a grade D in his exam he said he hoped to get a place on a course in English literature and theology.
