Storms and lightning strikes left more than 20,000 people across Yorkshire without power.

At least 29 strikes were recorded by the Yorkshire Electricity Distribution Company, mainly affecting overhead power lines.

The worst affected areas included Hull, Airedale and Adwick in South Yorkshire.

A house in Oaklands Drive, Harrogate, was damaged after it was struck by a lightning bolt. The owner, who was upstairs at the time, was unhurt.

Restoration work

Claire Shackleton from Harrogate was in her bedroom when the lightning struck her house, causing part of the roof to cave in and the power sockets to explode.

"The light socket had blown out of the wall and across the room and you can see the plaster embedded in the wall," she said.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Electricity Distribution Company said they had working hard to reconnect people affected by the weather.

"Most of the time we can reconnect people quite quickly," he said.

"Although the storms hampered the restoration work, our engineers and emergency repair teams have worked throughout the night."
