Doctor in court on murder charge
A family doctor has appeared in court charged with the murder of an elderly cancer patient.

Dr Howard Martin appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court, in County Durham, accused of killing 74-year-old Harry Gittins.

Mr Gittins, who was a patient of Dr Martin, who had a surgery in Newton Aycliffe, died on 22 January.

Dr Martin, who was first arrested in May, will appear before Teesside Crown Court on 28 September.

Mr Gittins, who was married with an adult son and daughter, had completed his hospital cancer treatment six days before he died.

His body was exhumed in February for forensic tests to determine the cause of his death.

The GP is being held in custody pending a bail hearing on Friday.
