A woman in her 70s has been injured after fighting with a robber during a break-in at her home in south Belfast.

Two women were in the house in Beechhill Park West in the Newtownbreda area when three men forced their way in after breaking a window.

They ransacked the house and took money and savings during the incident at about 1000 BST on Sunday.

The woman was cut after struggling with one of the men.

Both pensioners were left badly shaken.

Presbyterian minister, the Reverend Alistair Hill, said: "We listen to the news every morning and it flows over us - but then sometimes you hear your own area mentioned and it pulls you up with a start.

"We are not accustomed to attacks in this area, though we are aware that a lot of attacks are happening on older people throughout the country."

Meanwhile, an elderly couple have been left badly shaken after two youths broke into their west Belfast home and ransacked it.

They kicked in the front door of the Norfolk Drive house just after midnight on Sunday.

The couple locked themselves in their room.

The police later arrested two youths.
