Extra money earmarked for road repairs is being used to pay for spiralling compensation claims caused by damaged surfaces, according to a new survey.

Councils admit the number of unfilled potholes are putting road safety at risk.

  • Breakfast's Max Foster was at a roadside in Cambridgeshire.

  • We heard from Edmund King, executive director with the RAC. He said:
"Compensation and poor roads create a vicious cycle."

We need to get out of this spiral of decline. We need a step increase in funding. Motorists have a right to better maintained roads. Roads only get resurfaced once in 53 years, it needs to be a priority to maintain roads, we have to break cycle of decline. The Government needs to change their thinking. 5% of what motorists pay must be spent on roads

  • We spoke to Shona Johnstone of Cambridgeshire county council. She said:

It is a big problem. We spend half a million on compensation. We are in a vicious cycle. We want the Government to boost resources. The responsiblity is also on householders.

    The Asphalt Industry Alliance say:

In England and Wales, complaints hit nearly 100 million pounds, that's a 50-percent rise on the year before. Eight out of ten English authorities believe there is a threat to road users' safety
