A murder inquiry has been launched after a 21-year-old man who was attacked after a night out with his brother in Grimsby, died in hospital.
Jeffrey Bennett died at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital on Sunday after being admitted with severe head injuries.
Mr Bennett and his brother were set upon by a gang of youths in Victor Street at about 0200 GMT on Saturday.
It is believed Mr Bennett's brother tried to protect him as he was beaten with a weapon as he lay on the ground.
Unknown weapon
The two brothers had been walking home along Freeman Street when they saw a group of men, aged 15 to 20, who shouted at them.
Several altercations then took place between the brothers and the gang before Mr Bennett was attacked with an unknown weapon in Victor Street.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Spicksley, of Humberside Police, said the reason for the attack is not known.
"It would appear that this was an ongoing incident starting in Freeman Street and finishing in Victor Street where the most serious of the assaults took place.
"To any members of the group who were not directly involved in the attacks, I urge them to come forward."
Police have appealed for witnesses and particularly want to trace the man who called an ambulance, as he said he saw what happened.
