Pair killed as car hits lamppost

A 22-year-old man and a woman of 21 have been killed as the car they were in hit a lamppost in Stoke-on-Trent.

Police said the vehicle also struck a telegraph pole as it crashed in Sandon Old Road, Meir, late on Saturday night.

Another man is described as being critically injured, while a second woman was badly hurt. A third man suffered minor injuries.

They are all being treated at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

The two people who were killed were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened at about 2340 GMT.

Police said no other vehicles were involved and have appealed to witnesses to contact them.
