Move to tackle school run parking
Keep Clear sign
Parents driving to school are being warned to park with care
Parents in Glasgow are being warned that they will be fined if they ignore "Keep Clear" markings outside schools.

A new pilot scheme launched as pupils return to school will see traffic wardens enforcing the no stopping areas at some school gates.

The markings are not new, but in Glasgow they are advisory and city council officials say they are often ignored.

Motorists falling foul of the latest drive face a £60 fine.

The council's 18-month trial scheme will attempt to tackle the problem of parents parking on yellow zigzags during the school run.

Parking attendants will carry out spot checks outside the 14 schools involved - one secondary and 13 primaries - and teachers and parents are also being asked to report any trouble spots.

It is hoped the clampdown will drive home the message that even stopping for a short period to drop children off puts others at risk.

Donald MacNiven, the city council's traffic manager, urged parents to be more responsible outside schools.

"The sign says no stopping, so they are not allowed to remain there - even for a few seconds," he said.

"If they do and there's a parking attendant there, then they will receive a penalty charge notice which will cost them £60."

Scotstoun Primary headteacher Tricia Martin said there had been several incidents involving motorists outside the school.

She said: "A parent grabbed a child from behind a reversing car in the nick of time, as the child did not understand what the reverse lights meant.

"A little girl was knocked down about two years ago and we have had a quite a few near misses."
