Plans to rid city of dumped cars
Abandoned car
The 'Take Back' scheme is free of charge
The registered owners of old cars in Hull can now have them removed free of charge under a scheme aimed at ridding the city of unwanted vehicles.

The city council has launched its 'Take Back' pilot scheme in the Riverside area.

If successful, the scheme will be rolled out across the city in the autumn.

The project is similar to vehicle amnesties in 2002 and 2003 when 600 unwanted vehicles were removed.

The scheme is in partnership with a recovery firm and has the backing of police and the fire service.

"The removal of unwanted vehicles helps to create a better environment and removes opportunities for crime and disorder," said a police spokesman.

"The improved appearance of communities contributes to a feeling of increased safety."

To take up the service, residents must provide proof of ownership for their car.
