Plunge windows 'meet standards'
Flat window
The toddler fell out of a fifth floor window at the block of flats
Glasgow Housing Association has defended the safety of its windows after the death of a 17-month-old boy who fell from a fifth floor flat.

John Theobald, from GHA, said all the windows in its properties had to be fitted with child safety locks.

John Ross McPhail fell from a tower block in Glenavon Road, Maryhill, on Tuesday, in what police described as "a tragic accident".

Mr Theobald said the GHA met all the relevant safety standards.

The area has been sealed off for forensic experts to examine the scene.

Local residents voiced concerns to reporters at the scene about the locking mechanism used on the flat windows.

Mr Theobald said: "All the windows installed meet or exceed the current building standards for properties.

"All the windows are fitted with childproof safety locks and the minimum height for the window is four inches above what's actually required.

"So in terms of any questions over the window, we meet all the relevant standards."

A police spokeswoman said: "Enquiries into the incident are currently ongoing although there would appear to be no suspicious circumstances.

"A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."
