Sewage flow leads to money rows
General view of Alderney
Many properties are not connected to sewage systems
Alderney's States Engineer has defended the island's infrastructure against criticisms that it is suffering from under-investment.

The claims were made by a resident who has said sewage was flowing through Victoria Street during last Saturday's Torchlight Procession.

But States Engineer Steve Price says the drainage system is working fine, and further improvement is planned.

He said the sewage leak came from a private property.

The resident said she was angered that Alderney's States was spending money on new building works when the island's infrastructure was, in her view, woefully inadequate.

The drainage system dates back to the Victorian era, and many of the island's houses are not connected to the main sewage system, relying instead on sealed storage tanks or mini-sewage works in their houses.
