Sheffield's Kelham Island Museum has been given £1m of lottery money to help conserve its collection of items from the city's industrial past.
The money from the Heritage Lottery Fund will also allow the public to see what goes on behind the scenes.
New storerooms and exhibition halls will be built and areas created where visitors can see conservation work being carried out.
Among the new galleries planned is one devoted to transport.
Engineering skills
This will include a number of cars built in Sheffield as well as two motorbikes designed to be used by women on shopping trips.
Kelham Island Museum is run by the Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust.
Its executive director, John Hamshere, said: "In most museums, up to 90% of the collections are kept in storerooms and hardly ever seen.
"Our aim is to put as much as possible on view and let the public see the engineering skills used to conserve and restore important items of our industrial heritage."
