Scotland's wasp numbers take off
Wasp
Experts say wasps will only sting if threatened
Scotland's wasp population has been increasing, according to a pest control company.

Rentokil said call-outs to deal with the insects have jumped by 20% this year.

Last year's blistering hot summer and the mild weather this year have resulted in a boost in insect numbers.

Rentokil said staff have been very busy dealing with calls for help. Barbecues and picnics have been plagued by the insects as they hunt for food.

One woman was admitted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after being attacked by a swarm.

But the hospital said there has not been an influx of people with stings so far.

Entomologists said the reason for that is wasps are not interested in people and will only attack when threatened.

They say the best way to deal with a wasp is simply to ignore it.
