Calls to get ferry back on route

Emeraude says it will keep a boat on the Solidor Five route
It is claimed Jersey's tourism industry could suffer if Emeraude Lines' main vessel is not in operation by Easter.

The politician responsible for sea travel says the Solidor Five must come out of harbour in France to operate on the route as soon as possible.

It is currently in Cherbourg and unable to leave because it is at the centre of a disagreement over engineering costs.

The company said it would have a vessel running the route during Easter if the Solidor Five was not available.

Vessel capacity

Harbours and Airport president Senator Len Norman said the company must take action to get the Solidor Five running again.

He said: "The ship is ideal for the route, it is very popular with travellers. Without the capacity on the route, Jersey could lose out as far as tourism is concerned."

The Solidor Five's replacement, the Solidor Four, has missed sailings because one of its engines has not been working.

Emeraude Channel Island manager Gordon Forrest said a decision will be made on the Solidor Five at the beginning of next week.

But he added if it did not return to service, the company will find a new boat.

He said: "If the Solidor Five is not coming back, we will do everything we can to replace it with a vessel of at least the same capacity and speed."
