Fans warned of mobile phone risk

Football fans are being targeted as part of a clampdown on drivers who use mobile phones at the wheel.

Officers from Derbyshire Police and Derby City Council will be at Pride Park for the Walsall match on 3 April.

They will be handing out leaflets, putting up posters and talking to supporters about the dangers of using a phone while driving.

Figures show on average at least one driver a day is fined for using a mobile phone in Derbyshire.

'Clear danger'

But Chief Inspector Paul Berry emphasised that was just the tip of the iceberg.

He said: "Though 67 people have been issued with fixed penalty notices, the truth is the number of people who are using mobile phones while driving is significantly higher.

"What we are trying to do is impact on that. The fact is if you are driving a car you present a danger to other people.

"If you are not looking what you are doing, if the car does not have your full attention you are a clear danger."
