Horror film Alien vs. Predator topped the US box office on its debut weekend.
The sci-fi movie - the latest from Fox's successful Alien and Predator film, comic book and computer game franchise - grossed $38.3m (£20.8m).
It replaces Tom Cruise film Collateral at the top of the US box office. The Michael Mann movie fell to third place.
Disney sequel Princess Diaries 2: Royal
Engagement, starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, opened at number two, , according to preliminary figures.

Thriller Collateral, starring Cruise and Jamie Foxx, took $16m (£8.7m) in its second week.
Animated film Yu-Gi-Oh: The Movie - about the children's card game - was another debut at the weekend and came in fourth with $9.3m (£5.05m), while The Bourne Supremacy, starring Matt Damon, took $8.3m (£4.5m).
M Night Shyamalan's horror thriller The Village, which debuted two weeks ago, was in sixth place with $7m (£3.8m).
It was followed by The Manchurian Candidate, with $6m (£3.25m), the comedy Little Black Book with $3.7m (£2m), Will Smith's I, Robot with $3.5m (£1.9m) and Spider-Man 2 with $3.4 (£1.85m).
Final weekend figures are due out on Monday.
