Police are investigating an ambulance crash in the centre of Northampton.

The incident took place at the junction of Billing Road, Cliftonville Road and Alfred Street at about 0745 GMT on Thursday.

The emergency vehicle ambulance had been travelling along Billing Road out of town with its siren on when it left the road.

It then collided with the wall of the Conservative Club before coming to rest on its side.

A Volkswagen Golf was also involved in the incident, suffering damage to its rear.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene which is a main thoroughfare in Northampton.

The crash led to major traffic congestion during the morning rush hour.

Road diversions were in place around the area and police directed traffic away from the scene.

It is not thought anyone was seriously injured.
