Papers still focused on Olympics

An undercover security breach, the Olympic opening ceremony, drugs testing and high ticket prices are all discussed by Sunday's papers.

The Sunday Mirror said its reporter got a job at the main stadium and stood feet away from President Bush and Tony Blair at the games' opening.

He also managed to smuggle a fake bomb onto the site, it claims.

The paper urges the authorities in Athens to carry out an urgent review "before it is too late".

The Observer is impressed with what it calls a "stunning start" to the games, but laments the high ticket prices which led to disappointing crowds.

The Sunday Times is pleased with the tough action taken by the Greek authorities against its two star athletes who missed doping tests.

"For once," it says, "drugs are not being swept under the carpet."

Officials withdrew sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou, who said they were in a motorbike accident.

The journalist who was kidnapped, then released in Iraq, tells his paper, the Sunday Telegraph, of his ordeal.

Speaking from the UK ambassador's residence in Kuwait, James Brandon says he was repeatedly beaten and pistol whipped by up to 30 men.

He recalls that one kidnapper held a gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

He says he will return to Iraq, adding: "I just want to do the reporting. I have no desire to be the story again."

Finally, the News of the World says a valuable painting owned by the Queen was destroyed when a police officer accidentally fell through it.

The officer was trying to carry out a security check at the time.

The painting - by Liverpool artist George Stubbs - was hanging in St James's Palace and was thought to be worth more than £1m.

The paper's headline puts it like this: "Created by Stubbs - Ruined by Constable."
