The family of an 80-year-old pedestrian who died after a road accident said she would be deeply missed.

Widow Betty Arthur died after a collision with a car as she was crossing the road on Stockton Road, in Hartlepool, at 1400 GMT on Tuesday.

The car driver, a 24-year-old man from Billingham, was not injured.

Mrs Arthur had three daughters and a son and a number of grandchildren and she was well known in the town's bowling circles.

In a statement, the family said: "The family are shocked and distressed at this time.

"She will be missed by all who knew her."
