Patients are to bypass NHS queues
NHS patients in Harrogate and Barnsley will be the first in the UK allowed to shop around for hospital consultants and appointment dates.

The government is using the towns in a pilot scheme that allows people to use a new NHS computer link via their GP.

Dates for treatment will be booked on the spot, ending the practice of people waiting months for bookings.

The scheme is part of the government's commitment to reduce NHS waiting times to no more than three months by 2006.
