Arrested man's death sparks probe
An investigation has begun into how a man died soon after being released from police custody in South Yorkshire.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is looking into the death last Monday of John Carmody, 52, from Mexborough.

He was released on bail from Rotherham police station where he had been held overnight on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

Mr Carmody was taken ill in a local gym and died in hospital.

Shortly before he was due to be released from the police station he complained of feeling unwell.

Officers were called to take him to hospital but he disappeared from the station.

South Yorkshire Police referred the death to the IPCC.

The commission has called in officers from Durham Constabulary to help in the investigation.
