Police in Dunfermline have taken the unusual step of publishing CCTV images of people believed to be witnesses to a crime in the town centre.

A 43-year-old woman was sexually assaulted on Saturday, 31 July at about 0215 BST.

Investigators hope that by releasing pictures of people near the area at the time, witnesses will be encouraged to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Fife Police or Crimestoppers.

Detective Inspector Alex Watson stressed that the people in the photographs were only being traced as potential witnesses in the on going inquiry into the assault.

He said: "I am anxious for the people who are in the photo to identify themselves to us, so that they can be eliminated from the inquiry.

"However if anybody knows anyone within the photos, I would also ask them to contact us and let us know who they are so that we can confirm that we have obtained everyone's identity."
