Prisoners hold an inmate hostage
Dartmoor Prison
The jail houses low security prisoners
A prisoner has been taken hostage by other inmates at Dartmoor Prison in Devon.

Trained negotiators are on the scene at the category C jail, but a Home Office spokesman said it was a "serious" but not uncommon incident.

The spokesman could not confirm if any weapons have been used, nor how many prisoners are involved.

The incident is confined within a cell, and the rest of the prison is said to be running normally and calmly.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "We can confirm there is an incident at HMP Dartmoor which is ongoing and under prison control.

"Specialist trained prison officers and negotiators are currently on the scene and dealing directly with the incident.

"The prison population is calm and the uninvolved prisoners are behaving in a responsible manner."
