Police moving into pole position
A police team, searching for a base in a Cumbrian village, have found a home in the local fire station.

Officers from Cumbria Constabulary had been liaising with Cumbria Fire Service about sharing accommodation.

From this week, Shap Fire Station will also provide access to police services and a sign has been put up to let people know.

Inspector Tom Hurst said the move was a good start in improving contact with the community.

The new police base is being launched at the fire station on Thursday.

Mr Hurst said: "Although it will not be a 24-hour service, this site will confirm our presence in the Shap area and our commitment to that community."

Cumbria Fire Service Divisional Officer Tony Stoddart said: "In this joint venture with the police, we are happy to share, in particular, our fire stations in rural locations in order to offer greater public access to all emergency services and in a bid to improve the peace of mind and quality of life of the public in Cumbria."
