Girl shot in eye with air weapon
A 17-year-old girl was shot in the eye with an air weapon as she canoed along a river in Northumberland, police said.

Northumbria Police said the girl, from the Morpeth area, was in a group of four on the River Tyne, near Hexham, at 1515 BST on Thursday.

The pellet lodged in her eye and she is awaiting surgery at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. The extent of her injuries is not yet known.

Two boys, aged 13 and 14, were arrested and bailed pending further inquiries.

The incident happened on a stretch of the river where the North and South Tyne meet.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said an air weapon was recovered. Police are asking for any witnesses to contact them.
