A 12-year-old girl was electrocuted on Sunday as she took a shortcut across a railway line to reach a station platform.

Kayleigh White was with a group of friends when she slipped and fell onto the 750-volt conductor rail at Broadstairs Station in Kent.

Paramedics treated her after the area was evacuated and the power was turned off, but she died at the scene.

Later in the week her best friend, 13-year-old Terri Owen, who was not with her when she died, said both girls often crossed the railway line, sometimes to check the timetable.

Office stabbing murder trial starts

The trial started on Monday of two men accused of killing a businessman who was stabbed to death at his office in St Leonards, East Sussex.

Michael Willard, 63, died in January 2003 after being stabbed in the back, allegedly when a wages robbery went wrong.

In their trial at Lewes Crown Court, which is expected to last about three weeks, Derek Hunter, 37, of West Hill Road, St Leonards, admits robbery but denies murder and Stephen Jones, 26, of Perth Road, St Leonards, denies both charges.

The court has heard the two men each say the other one stabbed Mr Willard.

Plans for toxic waste site outlined

On Wednesday it emerged that a landfill site where thousands of tonnes of hazardous waste would be dumped could be built in East Sussex.

Local firm Lloyds Environmental Waste Management has applied for permission to open the landfill site and a recycling facility in South Chailey, near Lewes.

Hazardous waste from Sussex has had to be taken to Swindon, the closest disposal site for such waste, since a change in European law earlier this year stopped toxic waste and household waste being disposed at the same site.

South Chailey residents told the BBC they were concerned about what would be dumped there and feared a big increase in traffic.

Kent girl dies in Austria coach crash

On Thursday it was revealed the youngest victim of a coach crash in Austria which killed five British holidaymakers was a 16-year-old girl from Tonbridge in Kent.

Rebecca Earland was in the bus with her parents and brother, all of whom were injured when it fell 60m down an embankment near Salzburg on Tuesday.

Austrian police believe the coach, carrying 42 British tourists, was forced off the road in Bad Duerrnberg by a minibus which swerved to avoid an oncoming car while overtaking.

The driver of the minibus has been charged with causing death by negligence.

Anger as baby is cremated without consent

A Brighton couple received an apology from their local NHS trust after their baby son was cremated without their consent.

Michelle Franco and Nick Bridgers
The couple said what had happened to their son was 'disgusting'

Michelle Franco and Nick Bridgers agreed for their son Tyler to undergo a post-mortem examination after a scan during pregnancy showed a fatal birth defect.

Tyler was delivered after an induced labour at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and the couple had planned to bury him.

The Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust apologised and said it had launched an inquiry into the incident.
