River search for boy called off

It is not clear how Adam got into difficulties

The search for a boy feared drowned after he was swept away in a river has been called off for the night by rescuers.

Adam Charlotte, of Partington, fell into the River Bollin at Dunham Massey, near Altrincham, Greater Manchester, while playing with friends.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the search would begin again first thing on Saturday.

The search for Adam started at about 1600 BST on Thursday.

Inspector Philip Haworth, of GMP, told BBC News Online: "We have had officers and other search teams in and around the river all day on Friday and unfortunately nothing has been turned up.

The search continued until nightfall on Friday

"It is just too dangerous to carry on in the dark - so the teams will be starting again at first light on Saturday."

Three of Adam's friends were treated in hospital for shock after the incident.

Adam's parents are continuing to hope their son will be found.

"We have been out of our minds with worry and we just want to know what has happened to him," said his parents Adam and Ann.

It is not yet clear how he got into difficulties.

A police spokesman said on Thursday: "He had been with three friends when he got into difficulty and was swept away from them."

Officers from Greater Manchester and Cheshire police forces have been involved, along with the fire service, air support unit, underwater search unit, Bolton Mountain Rescue, the tactical aid unit and personnel from the Rivers Authority.

Dunham Massey is a National Trust site including a Tudor mansion, gardens and a deer park.
