More than 1,000 people are demanding that lifeguards be introduced at a Cumbria beach resort where a boy died.

Wayne Adams, 10, died after getting into difficulties while swimming with his brother Jason, 11, at St Bees at the weekend.

Jason remains ill in hospital in Whitehaven.

Neighbours of the family have so far gathered more than 1,000 names on a petition demanding council bosses bring in lifeguards during busy periods.

'Totally devastated'

Copeland Borough Council says it may consider introducing lifeguards to the beach area, which is popular with thousands of holidaymakers.

But the authority says it has also has take into account a number of "different factors" before making any final decision.

Brian Parr, who organised the petition, said people were angry at reports that council bosses were unwilling to pay for lifeguards.

He said: "People are totally devastated by what has happened. What price do you put on life?

"When parents take children down to the beach, they are not looking for accidents, they want a good day out."
