Fishermen to have say on scheme
Prince Charles talking with fishermen
Prince Charles launched the Invest In Fish initiative in April
Fishermen in the South West are to get the opportunity to have their say over a new plan aimed at preserving fish stocks.

The Invest In Fish initiative was launched by Prince Charles during a visit to Plymouth in April.

The three-year scheme is the first of its kind to involve fishermen, environmentalists and retailers.

A consultation period is now under way, and if the scheme proves successful, it could be copied across Europe.

Protect stocks

South West fishermen say European Union fish quotas have destroyed much of their business and forced them to throw fresh fish back into the sea.

The scheme will look for the best ways to manage fish stocks in the English Channel.

It will scientifically assess various ways to protect fish stocks, including the use of different nets or the possible use of closed seasons for fishing.

The scheme is seen by many as a pilot project, and if it works in the South West, it could be copied in other European countries.
