A police search was taking place on Thursday after a 14-year-old boy was swept away in a river at Dunham Massey, near Altrincham, Greater Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police mobilised the force helicopter and plane, along with riverboat patrols on the River Bollin, where the boy fell in.
"He had been with three friends when he got into difficulty and was swept away from them," said a force spokesman.
"The three friends are currently being treated for shock."
It is not yet clear how the boy got into difficulties.
