Cruise ships 'could boost port'
Falmouth Docks
The docks company says dredging and a new berth are needed
Tourism leaders are warning investment is needed at a Cornish port to cash in on cruise ship visits.

Businesses in Falmouth are being urged to help fund a shuttle bus to take passengers from the port to the shops.

The docks company, A and P Falmouth, says dredging and a new berth are also needed to make sure big liners can get into the port.

The town could then be included on their routes, bringing valuable extra trade to the area.

Marketing regions

Bob Harrison, from Destination South West, which encourages cruise ship visits, said it was vital there was more money available for the ports and towns.

"We have got to have a presence because the cruise ship industry is very fickle.

"A lot of people are out there marketing their particular regions.

"Cruise ships will go where it is easiest to go and if they think there is something there for their passengers, they will go there."

But Daphne Churcher, from the town's Chamber of Trade, admitted many traders were sceptical of the impact cruise ships would have on the town.

"The only thing we can do is contribute towards the shuttle bus, and half a dozen or so businesses are committed to that already.

"Unless people can see the business coming through their tills they won't commit, but there is more interest than there was."
