Tuition fees

We lead the programme with the fall-out of the vote on tuition fees. Nick Brown, one of the leading rebels and an ally of the Chancellor, said that last-minute concessions had persuaded him to back the Government. But Downing Street insisted there had been no cave-in.

Was it a case of rebels being bought off by the government or called off by Gordon Brown?

New Hampshire vote

Tom Carver was in New Hampshire for us. With the race to challenge George Bush for the Presidency wide open, could the liberal, Howard Dean, regain his momentum, or would Senator John Kerry build on his early success in Iowa?

Hutton Report

We also looked forward to the publication of the Hutton Report on the death of the Government scientist, Dr David Kelly. Our Political and Diplomatic Editors provided a guide to what to look for and how to judge who Lord Hutton thinks is really to blame.

Newsnight can be seen on BBC Two at 2230 GMT, or in Real video, either live or on demand, by clicking on the latest programme button.
