Parking rage - driver loses leg

Police in Swansea are trying to trace a pensioner who it is thought drove over a taxi driver - who later had to have his leg amputated - in a row over a parking space.

Driver Ian Anderson, who described the man as looking like a "grandfather" - said he deliberately drove into him and ran over his left leg, fracturing it in five places.

The man then drove away in a silver Mercedes or Audi car - leaving the taxi driver in agony.

The 61-year-old - who fears he will now lose his livelihood - described how he parked his car in the centre of the Uplands area of the city in November, before being approached by a silver haired man claiming he had seen the space first.

Mr Anderson said he walked away from the pensioner, who returned to his car and started the engine.

Mr Anderson then crossed the road.

The next thing he knew, he had been hit by the pensioner's car.

People working in nearby shops ran out as soon as they realised what had happened and called an ambulance.

With his leg broken in five places, Mr Anderson underwent a series of operations and skin grafts at Swansea's Morriston Hospital.

More recently, an infection set in and he is recovering in hospital from surgery to amputate his leg from above the knee.

Appealing for witnesses, Detective Inspector Paul Henwood of South Wales Police said: "If this man is prepared to do this once he could do something similar again.

"We are determined to trace him for the sake of Mr Anderson and his family," he added.
