Senator Kinnard says other laws have got in the way

Jersey's Home Affairs President could face a vote of no confidence in her committee at a future States Meeting.

Senator Wendy Kinnard has been criticised by St Martin Deputy Bob Hill and fellow Senator Christopher Lakeman who claim she has been too slow in implementing new human rights legislation.

But Senator Kinnard says she is committed to bringing in the new laws despite the criticism.

She says other laws have got in the way.

'Absolutely committed'

"There are kinds of issues where priorities are set by others over which I myself don't actually have control," she said.

"That is a matter for the attorney general, but we are absolutely committed to getting this law in place as quickly as possible this year."

But Senator Lakeman believes the legislation should be on the statute books within three months.

And Deputy Hill is annoyed by the recent confusion over the issue of new driving licences and angered by proposals to change the oath of office sworn by island police officers.

Senator Kinnard became President in 2002 succeeding former Deputy Alastair Layzell.
